Performative Business Talk
Performative Business Talk
Performative business talk is the specific dialect I find most irritating. It is the language of people who want to sound like they are building without actually building.
What it sounds like
- Hype vocabulary untethered from output
- "Synergy", "ecosystem", "disruption" used as filler
- Stacking of buzzwords to imply depth
- Long paragraphs that promise momentum and deliver nothing
- LinkedIn-flavored cadence in places that do not need it
It is a specific cadence. Once you hear it, you hear it everywhere.
Why it frustrates me
Because it is a social performance that mimics the surface of Entrepreneurship without any of the substance. It wastes the reader's time. It obscures actual thinking. And it often shields a weak underlying idea from scrutiny.
I am No-BS by default. Performative talk is the exact opposite: BS as a style.
What it signals
When someone uses a lot of it, I treat it as a signal that the underlying work may not be real. Not always, but often enough to be a useful filter.
What replaces it
- Direct language
- Concise writing
- Specific claims that can be checked
- Actual artifacts instead of vocabulary
How it connects
Performative business talk is the verbal form of Fake Work. It overlaps with Try-hard Language and Fake Motivational Tone. It is what Communication Preferences is designed to resist.
