A historical novel about a young girl, books, and survival in Nazi Germany.
Essay
This book stayed with me because it treats words as something heavier than decoration. Language can comfort, wound, survive, remember, and protect. I always respond when a story takes words seriously in that way.
It belongs close to Language as Thought and Mortality in my mind. Books can become a way of carrying humanity through conditions that try to crush it. I think that idea matters a lot, especially in a project like this one where writing itself is part of what I am using to preserve a life.
