1984 — George Orwell

A dystopian novel about surveillance, control, and the manipulation of truth.

Essay

The deepest unease in 1984 comes from how thoroughly truth can be managed. Surveillance is frightening, brutality is frightening, but the more chilling move is smaller than both: narrowing language until people gradually lose the ability to think clearly about what is being done to them.

That is why the book connects so strongly to Language as Thought for me. If language degrades, thought degrades with it. 1984 made that feel less like an abstract theory and more like a civilizational warning. It is one of those books that keeps making the value of clear thinking feel serious.
