I did not keep this book because it offered some perfect formula. I kept it because it treated staying alive itself as serious work. There is honesty in that framing. Sometimes the achievement is not transcendence. Sometimes it is endurance.
That is why it belongs next to Why to Live and Mortality for me. It makes the case that survival can still contain dignity, and that small reasons can matter more than dramatic ones when a person is trying to remain inside life. I trust that kind of seriousness.
