Sputnik Sweetheart — Haruki Murakami
Sputnik Sweetheart — Haruki Murakami
A novel about longing, distance, and emotional disconnection between three people.
Essay
This book stayed with me for the same reason a lot of Murakami stays with me: emotional distance rendered very softly but very clearly. There is something about his way of writing loneliness that does not beg for pity. It just lets the condition exist with its full strangeness.
That matters to me because I think books can be valuable just for making certain internal states more readable. Sputnik Sweetheart belongs right next to Loneliness and Inner Life for that reason. It gives shape to a kind of human distance that many people feel but rarely describe well.
