Norwegian Wood — Haruki Murakami
Norwegian Wood — Haruki Murakami
A literary novel about memory, grief, love, and emotional isolation in young adulthood.
Essay
Murakami, for me, lives in a very particular emotional register. Quiet rooms, memory, distance, longing, and the feeling that a person can be close to life while still never fully merging with it. Norwegian Wood carries that register very strongly.
That is why it belongs beside Loneliness and Inner Life. I do not read Murakami for plot mechanics. I read him for atmosphere and the way he makes emotional isolation feel strangely clean, almost musical. This book sharpened that taste in me.
