This is one of those books that clears the room a little. The things that look urgent start to look less important next to illness, time, and the simple question of how a person should live while he still can.

I keep it close to Mortality and What Lasts because that is the pressure it brings. It does not make me think about success first. It makes me think about warmth, attention, relationship, and whether a life feels inhabited in the right way. I respect books that can do that without sounding fake.
